Having previously worked as an acclaimed visual merchandiser and buyer, Nicola Helgesen decided to follow her heart and swapped her successful career for a new challenge, launching her own luxury womenswear label, La Petite S***** in 2001.
Knowing the market well, Helgesen was keen to create garments that were ‘accessible, flattering, fun and completely unique’. She produced a small collection of gorgeous hand finished bustiers and made an appointment to see the buyers at Browns.
The day she cycled to the iconic London store, her backpack bulging with samples, was the same day she pedalled home clutching her first order. It was also the day La Petite Salope – or the little strumpet – was born and in less than a week the collection had completely sold out.
By 2004 Helgesen had increased her range to include the famous ‘Prom Dress’ whose in-built corsetry won column inches and earned Helgesen the British Fashion Council ‘New Generation’ award which financed her phenomenally successful London Fashion Week debut. Since then the multi award winning brand has delivered 15 consistent signature collections. Keen to liberate herself from restrictive and complex internal construction and a desire to create clothes that looked amazing but offer comfort to the wearer, the designer has turned her attention to sourcing technically unique Italian cloths which have allowed her to create truly contemporary feminine shapes without the use of restrictive boning.
True to her personal sense of style and proportion this new vision has cleverly maintained her roots whilst delivering a more nuanced sophistication. Season on season LPS has delighted their band of loyal customers, including celebrity fans Gwyneth Paltrow, Thandie Newton, Kim Cattrall, Freida Pinto, Florence Welch, Jourdan Dunn, Kate Moss, Emma Watson, Mariella Frostrup, Elle Macpherson and many others.
